What is lasik eye surgery? LASIK is the most common refractive surgery today. The procedure involve using laser beam to correct refractive error. The name LASIK stand for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis". But, why LASIK is so popular? LASIK has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and patient achieve good vision by the very next day. FDA approved for LASIK in 1999. LASIK has the following three separate procedures:
Lasik eye corneal flap 1) flapping the corneal, the surgeon will uses microkeratome instrument to make a corneal flap. The flap is then folded back exposing the inner cornea.
Lasik eye laser shape 2) reshaping the inner cornea, the surgeon will reshape by removing some inner corneal tissue by using an ultraviolet beam from excimer laser to evaporating tiny peices of tissue. After cornea is reshaped, it can better focus light into the eye retina providing clearer vision than before.
Lasik cornea flap replace 3) laying the flap back, the surgeon will cover the operation area with the folded cornea flap. The flap will heal itselft over the time.
Both nearsighted (myopia) and farsighted (hyperopia) people can received a LASIK surgery. In nearsighted case, the procedure will flatten the cornea. In farsighted case, the procedure will make the cornea steeper. The eximer lasers also can correct astigmatism which is widely misunderstand that it cannot. The procedure can correct astigmatism by reshape an irregular cornea into a more smooth normal shape.
If you are going to take LASIK eye surgery, you have to see your surgeon first. They will examine whether you are a good candidate for LASIK and what other procedure you may have if you are not. The surgeon will examine your eyes for their health, how refractive correction will perform for your eyes. Any sign of eye disease must be treated before taking the LASIK surgery.
